Located on the south facing shore of Fox Island, Washington, the Sonar project is an adaptive reuse of an abandoned naval sonar testing facility. Submarines were suspended between barges moored in Carr Inlet where sound tests were conducted to adjust the silent threat of the US fleet. The new residence takes advantage of the shoreline position to open up to southern views of the Sound.
A top floor primary suite features expansive water views and rooftop deck access. An existing dock juts out into Carr Inlet where the site was originally a ferry stop for the Mosquito Fleet operating in Puget Sound.
The bright materials contrast with the heavily wooded site - serving as a lighthouse element on Fox Island.
Industrial materials are used to mimic the glass and steel appearance of the Washington State ferry fleet. Durability and low maintenance were a necessity given its exposure to water and weather.
Beachcombing is a must - with low tides exposing naval relics and Puget Sound history.
